VORDER GRAUSPITZ, LIECHTENSTEIN - 2599m

Introduction

Situated in the tiny nation of Liechtenstein, the Grauspitz claims the title of the highest peak of this country. While it has gained a modest reputation for its extensive network of hiking paths, it may surprise some to learn that there is no regularly maintained trail leading to the Grauspitz. The most accessible path to the summit is graded as class 3-4, involving an ascent of the Schwarzhorn followed by navigating a razor-thin ridge. Consequently, the Grauspitz is rarely ascended by individuals. In contrast, the nearby Falknis, located 2 kilometers to the west, and Naafkopf, positioned 2 kilometers to the east, attract a greater number of hikers due to the availability of maintained trails leading to their peaks. The Grauspitz’s summit register is documented from the year 1992, and by the summer of 2006, it was approximately one-third filled. Reaching the Grauspitz demands a somewhat laborious approach via gravel roads and narrow trails. Upon reaching the Ijes farm, climbers must ascend steep grass slopes and traverse awkward scree fields. Upon reaching the summit of the Schwarzhorn, the most perilous section of the journey, the East Ridge, becomes accessible. Assuming familiarity with the terrain (which is essential) and having studied the route extensively, the Grauspitz can offer a highly enjoyable day hike. The panoramic view from the summit encompasses Germany to the north, the entirety of Liechtenstein beneath your feet, Austria to the east, and Piz Bernina in the distant south. Despite its “low” elevation, the Grauspitz should not be underestimated, as this mountain delivers a considerable challenge.

Best time to go

The best time to go to Vorder Grauspitz is between June and October, however, any time of the year it can be climbed. The cable car will be closed in winter and opens around May to October. We do not recommend going in winter without proper mountaineering experience, even in summer it is not a beginner route. There is no defined path and there are several very exposed areas, proper equipment and experience is required.

Section 1 - Starting Point - Parking Malans Älplibahn to Älplibahn Top

For simplicity the starting point we will use is the Älplibahn parking in Malans, Switzerland. From here you can choose to either take the cable car to the top station / restaurant or start your hike from here. Of course there are several other possible starting points from which to start the hike, but for simplicity, we will use this as a starting point as most people choose to take the cable car to the “start” of the trail. Purists will likely want to hike the entire route, which can also be done from this location. From this point it is possible to choose to hike or to go up by cable car.

If you do choose the cable car, we recommend calling the Älplibahn at least a 2 days ahead of time as there is limited space, around 8 people per time and departures are every 30 minutes, starting at 7:00am. I have been to Grauspitz multiple times including with the cable car and had no issues finding a spot last minute, however, if you come specially for the cable car calling ahead is recommended. Keep in mind they do not all speak English very well. If traveling alone it is also recommended to let them know you are climbing Grauspitz as these very friendly people keep an eye out for your safe return. A round trip is around 18CHF and incudes parking. The phone number is +41 081 322 47 64. Their website is https://www.aelplibahn.ch/. Here you can find additional information regarding the current prices, phone number, etc.

Below you can find the exact Google Maps location and the route from the parking lot of the Älplibahn to the Upper Station of the Älplibahn cable car / Älplibahn Restaurant. The route here is very straight forward and you will be able to see the cable car going up as you are hiking. Please do check with the Älplibahn as you will need to pay for parking there. This hiking route takes about 3 hours.

Section 2 - Directions From Älplibahn / Restaurant to Alp Ijes

Navigating Section 2 of the trail promises a captivating 2-3 hour journey from the Älplibahn Cable Car station to the scenic Alp Ijes farm. The map, easily downloadable onto devices like Fenix watches or phone apps, provides a clear visual guide for hikers. The trail, a mix of uphill and downhill stretches along a gravel road, invites exploration of the picturesque landscape.

While the majority of the route is straightforward, certain points demand attention, and to assist, detailed pictures and a comprehensive route description are provided. These resources prove invaluable, ensuring walkers can confidently navigate the trail, even at less obvious junctures. Key landmarks, including identifiable farmhouses and the majestic backdrop of mountains, are strategically positioned along the route, serving as reliable markers to maintain direction.

Section 2 reflects a thoughtful integration of traditional hiking and modern technology. The map’s compatibility with devices enhances the overall experience, offering real-time guidance and accessibility. Hikers can immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings while enjoying the convenience of well-guided navigation. From the cable car summit to the Alp Ijes farm, this section beckons adventurers to embrace the tranquility of nature, promising both an engaging hike and the assurance of a meticulously planned trail experience.

alplibahn restaurant

Whether you hiked up or take the cable car, you will come accross the Älplibahn Restaurant. From the hiking route you will see the restaurant and tables, with the cable cartop exit. You will want to continue straight in this direction past the restaurant. The people are very friendly and you can stop here for water, food, and rest if needed.

alphibahn starting point

If you came up with the cable car, you will need to turn left immediately after coming out of the cable car. You will see this sign on your right and a viewpoint with a map of the surrounding peaks to your left. Go straight towards the woods and follow this path. Continue straight for about 20-30 minutes following the path.

grauspitz-directions-go-straight

After walking for about 20-30 minutes you will come across this junction. Pay attention as you will want to go straight on the dirt/grass path, not onto the gravel road. It is possible to go right, however, it adds a bit of time and is less straight forward than going straight. For this route simply continue straight onto the less defined grass path.

Grauspitz cross small bridge

After walking for approximately 10 minutes you will come across this small bridge, continue straight accross and follow the dirt path. The next point will be a farmhouse.

Grauspitz first farmhouse

After the small bridge continue walking for another 10 minutes you will come across the first farmhouse. Walk past this house and turn right onto the gravel path after passing the house. You will walk uphil from here until the next house with a huge Swiss flag. Continue straight for 30 minutes uphill.

After continuing to walk for approximately 30 minutes uphil you will see another farmhouse with a huge Swiss flag (potentially the flag will not be there). Another way to recognize this point is that it is on top of the hill, from this farmhouse you will start walking back down hill.

Next you will come accross a bench and continue straight

After walking for another 10-20 minutes you will come across the first farmhouse. Walk past this house and turn right onto the gravel path after passing the house. You will walk uphil from here until the next house with a huge Swiss flag.

About walking 10-20 minutes you will come to this junction, keep to the left heading uphill until you reach the tunnel.

Tunnel to Grauspitz

After about 20-30 minutes you will reach a tunnel. Continue straight through the tunnel. If you arrive early it is good to bring a flashlight as there are some uneven stones inside making it easy to trip. During the day it is quite dark as well, but light enough.

After the tunnel continue straight for another 5-10 minutes until you see the last farmhouse. On weekends there can be a large gathering where sheep are sold. Congratulations, you made it to Alp Ijes.

Section 3 - Directions From Alp Ijes to Vorder Grauspitz

There are 2 options to get to Vorder Grauspitz from Alp Ijpes. You can choose option A, a direct route which is easier and more simplified. You avoid walking along the ridge, this otion is best if you do not feel comfortable being on the ridge or is there is more ice and snow. The terrain is already quite slippery and rocks are loose. Or you can choose Option B, which is to walk along the ridge up to Hinter Grauspitz and then continue down a steep section of the ridge and walk up again to the Vorder Grauspitz. See the maps below:

For both options you will start from Alp Ijes, follow the red line (you can cross before or after the farmhouse, there is no real path so depending on where animals are you might want to navigate around them). This section is relatively straight forward. You just need to make your way up as indicated above. From the to of where the red line ends you will be able to see both Hinter Grauspitz and Vorder Grauspitz. From there you have 2 option to choose from depending on your experience and which route suits you best.

Grauspitz route options

Once you reach the point where you can see both Vorder Grauspitz and Hinter Grausitz, you can choose which route suits you best. The easier route, recommended for less experienced climbers, and for worse conditions with ice, snow or rain, you can choose Option A. If you also want to reach Hinter Grauspitz, you can opt for Option B which is a bit longer and more difficult, you will follows the ridge all the way along the ridge, going up Hinter Grauspitz, down again a section, and back up the ridge to Vorder Grauspitz.

Route to Vorder Grauspitz - Option A

Grauspitz Route Option A 01

Start by walking down about 20 meters and start straight through direction the middle of Vorder Grauspitz and Hinter Grausppitz.

Grauspitz Route Option A 02

Continue straight throuth this section and after 300 meters or so you can start going slightly to the right aiming for the middle.

Grauspitz Route Option A 03

Continue going up at a slight angle toward the middle of the 2 peaks and then continue going up diagonally. There are a lot of loose rocks making it easy to slip. Be especially careful on the way down, going up is easier, but slips are common going down.

Grauspitz Route Option A 04

You will reach the last section after going up diagonally for 300 meters. This is the last section and about 100 meters to go. Go up and over this, then down slightly and back up to the final stretch. There are some exposed areas here and caution should be used.

Grauspitz Route Option A 05

The last few meters you will see the statue and steel flame. This is the final stretch.

Route to Vorder Grauspitz - Option B

Grauspitz option B route

For route option B you will stay up and continue along the ridge until you come to Hinter Grauspitz, this peak has a huge cross on top, many people mistake Hinter Grauspitz for Vorder Grauspitz due to the cross, however, this is not the highest peak of Lichtenstein.

Hinter Grauspitz extreme caution

Once you reach Hinter Grauspitz you will continue down along the ridge using extreme caution especially in the section marked with a red circle. Rocks are loose and this section can be extremely dangerous. It is recommneded to go with more than one person and use a rope on this section in case of a slip or fall.

Grauspitz option B route Hinter Grauspitz to Vorder Grauspitz

Continue along the ridge as shown above. This will bring you to the final stretch of the route. You can also traverse a bit lower to avoid going exactly on the ridge in slippery conditions. Even in good weather the rocks are loose and slips happen.

Grauspitz Route Option A 04

This is the last section and about 100 meters to go. Go up and over this, then down slightly and back up to the final stretch. There are some exposed areas here and caution should be used.
